Each cell in the body contains a tiny clock called a telomere, which shortens each time the cell divides. Short telomeres are linked to a range of human diseases, including HIV, osteoporosis, heart disease, and aging. Studies show that an enzyme within the cell, called telomerase, keeps immune cells young by preserving their telomere length and their ability to continue dividing.
The “stress hormone” cortisol suppresses immune cells' ability to activate their telomerase. This is why the cells of people under chronic stress have shorter telomeres.
Stress makes people more susceptible to illness. Veterans, air traffic controllers, people who drive long daily commutes, caregivers for chronically ill family members, and just about everyone I know has quite a lot of constant stress. Acupuncture has been shown to increase the production of telomerase, lengthen telomeres, and lower the stress hormone cortisol.
A study published recently in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that electro-acupuncture was effective in reducing symptoms of depression. Acupuncture worked faster and reduced symptoms more dramatically at weeks two and four than Prozac (fluoxetine). Among the patients who got better, a higher percentage of the acupuncture recipients showed “great improvement.”
Anxiety, panic disorders, PTSD, and stress can be effectively treated with a unique protocol of scalp Acupuncture. One study showed this approach to have a 100% success rate in treating veterans with PTSD after six treatments.
